You know, Russ - I want to thank you for more plainly stating than any MRA group member here what the MRA truly is - a backlash movement against the women's movement that they perceive has caused the "pendulum" to swing too far towards women. The fact is that women aren't even close to reaching equality with men in our society; we still do the most unpaid labor, we still make less than men, and that does include at the same companies and in jobs that equate in terms of responsibility, required education and hours worked..... but even though women are not yet equal, we have become TOO close for many men's comfort. We are changing the status quo too much for their ease, and they want that old pendulum to swing back closer to what it was when we started this movement. To where? to 1976, the year I was refused entry into a typically male-dominated study only because I was female, despite better grades than my male counterparts? Was that a better time for you? Or how about in the 1980's when men I taught were routinely advanced past me because of they received mentoring by the male bosses that I was not privy to.. would that be better? Women are by no means equal yet to men in our society. As we get closer, is your group going to become more violent in not just rhetoric, but in action? That is my fear. The MRA is a frightening backlash group that does NOT want women to be seen and treated equally with men; they want to hang on to their male privilege in a patriarchal, some privilege which they seem strangely unaware that they posses. And they want to continue to blame women for the result of our patriarchal culture, as if it was something we had wanted int he first place. (It was not).
